• Who am I

    • I am a student at Columbia University in New York.
    • My areas of study are Computer Science and Philosophy.
    • I am a researcher in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Virtual Reality (VR).
  • Why am I discussing VR in this Plurality meeting?

  • Subjective Reality <----------------------------------------------------------> Objective Reality

    • On the far left: subjective, individual
      • any VR experience designed for a single user
      • imagine being in a virtual world alone, with only non-player characters (NPCs)
    • On the far right: objective, shared
      • any VR experience meant for multiple users
      • for example, VRChat
    • Somewhere in the middle: a mix of shared reality and individual differences
      • “Asymmetric Reality”
  • Examples

    • Two people in the same room, but the room looks different to each person

      • A tweet by @abi showcasing different interior decor styles in a living room.
      • Images attached to the tweet show the variations in decor.
    • Two people having lunch at a virtual restaurant, one seeing it as a Chinese restaurant and the other as a French restaurant.

    • In the typical reality or VR setting, multiple people in the same space usually see the same world.

      • However, it is possible for multiple people in the same VR space to experience slightly different realities.
    • For instance, consider a scenario where multiple people are collaborating in a VR environment.

      • There are building blocks and monitors in the room.
      • The top image represents the original reality.
        • However, individuals in red, blue, and green see customized realities with slight variations.
      • This customization allows for experiencing different realities while collaborating in a shared space in VR.
    • However, individual customization of reality can lead to communication discrepancies due to the “misalignment” of realities.

      • Issues like one person seeing objects that the other cannot or objects being in different positions when pointed at can arise.
    • To address this, two approaches can be taken:

      • For example, if an object is pointed at appears differently to the other person, the pointing finger’s position can be displayed differently to them.
      • When someone talks about a specific object, ensure that the object appears in the same position for everyone.
    • This aims to implement both personalized optimization of subjective reality and the absorption of discrepancies caused by individual optimizations.

      • By achieving this, a different type of VR space can be created, diverging from the traditional paradigm of everyone experiencing the exact same reality.

When we see “Internet of Things,” let’s make it an Internet of Beings. When we see “Virtual Reality,” let’s make it a Shared Reality. When we see “Machine Learning,” let’s make it Collaborative Learning. When we see “User Experience,” let’s make it about Human Experience. When we hear “the Singularity is Near,” let us remember: the Plurality is here.

Impressions

LearningengAki Discussion goes onto “shared reality” with the poem image

  • shared reality in Plurality Poem- nishio Reality sharing with a “gap” between subjective reality and objective reality#gleninjapan

  • blu3mo#gleninjapan I talked about this on the spot at scrapbox.io Asymmetric Reality (Shared reality with a gap) image [/blu3mo-public/Asymmetric Reality (Shared reality with a gap)](https://scrapbox.io/blu3mo-public/Asymmetric Reality (Shared reality with a gap))

  • blu3mo#gleninjapan The presentation material connecting Plurality context in a rush is here (Sorry for the mix of Japanese and English) [/blu3mo-public/20240103 GlenInJapan LT material](https://scrapbox.io/blu3mo-public/20240103 GlenInJapan LT material) nishio It was an interesting presentation that didn’t seem improvised after coming to the venue!#gleninjapan

  • ayugo Asymmetric Reality” Shared reality with a “gap” Interested in shared reality that fills the gap in time #PluralityTokyo#gleninjapan

  • nishio When you touch an object, it feels like seeing the image of the moment the object appeared, like “reading the memory of the object,” which is futuristic and interesting. It’s already reality, isn’t it?#gleninjapan

  • nishio The video is convincing, isn’t it? (Agree)#gleninjapan

  • Asymmetric Reality” Shared reality with a gap Interested in shared reality that fills the gap in time#pluralitytokyo#gleninjapan https://t.co/3JfnaarXwn @(ayugo) January 3, 2024

  • Even though two players are in the same space, the VR spaces they see are different, Asymmetric Reality is interesting. Like a comedy sketch by JARUJARU.#gleninjapan pic.twitter.com/7Nd7HpbWd3 @(hal_sk) January 3, 2024

  • Shared reality with a gap, interesting. Never thought about it. Could VR engines act as adjudicators through lazy evaluation like Lazy Evaluation? Instead of confining everything to one world like online gaming, in immersive experiences, it might be okay to only share the concept of objects and allow rendering to be personalized locally https://t.co/HHLkFyUyB6 @(takeishg) January 4, 2024

Things I felt were missing in the discussion:

  • Discussion on network dynamics when considering discrepancies among three or more individuals
  • Positioning the flow of history as discussed in LT of Name Tekkai - Smooth Sharing of Virtual Space-Time
  • Creating artificial discrepancies in a certain area to enable the sharing of what truly needs to be shared
