Universal design refers to the design of architecture (facilities), products, information, and other elements that can be used by anyone, regardless of their cultural background, language, nationality, age, gender, disability, or ability differences. Its goal is to create designs that are inclusive and accessible to all individuals.

It is important to note that universal design is not just about designing for people with disabilities, but rather about creating designs that can be used by everyone. Designating it as “design for people with disabilities” often carries a stigma, as it can imply that the design is only intended for a specific group. For example, using a wheelchair can sometimes lead to being perceived as visibly disabled. Therefore, it is more meaningful to refer to it as “design for everyone” or “design for all”.
