Nationalism

• As a reaction to the Westernization movement in the Meiji Era, Japan shifted towards a more nationalistic ideology.
• Nationalism is the belief in the superiority and importance of one’s own nation.
• The Imperial Rescript on Education aimed to instill loyalty to the emperor as an educational philosophy, leading to a rise in fascism. (Religion had to be kept separate from the state.)
• Tokutomi Soho advocated for populism (placing importance on the common people), but later shifted towards nationalism.
