Founded in 1812, it is the third oldest prestigious liberal arts college in New York State. Located on a hill overlooking the small town of Clinton, it has a campus that combines old history and modernity on a vast 1,350-acre site. The college’s motto is the ancient Greek proverb “Know Thyself.” It follows an open curriculum policy, allowing students to flexibly choose subjects of interest and relevance for their general education courses. Through a typical liberal arts education, students learn to think, write, and speak creatively and critically by the time they graduate. Additionally, self-directed learning is encouraged, and there are many opportunities to participate in projects and research.
