📕 What is “Virtual Time”?
- Analogy: Virtual Reality for Time, not Space
- 🗺 Physical Space vs Virtual Space
- 🕑 Physical Time vs Virtual Time
- (relativizing physical time)
- 🗺 Physical Space vs Virtual Space
- Definition:
- Definition of Virtual Reality:
-
An experience that seems different from reality on the surface, but has the same effect as reality (Hirose, 2019)
-
- Then, the definition of Virtual Time:
-
An experience of “time” that seems different from real time on the surface, but has the same effect as time.
-
- Definition of Virtual Reality:
🛠 How is it possible?
- In other words, how can we recreate the virtual effect of time?
- Virtual Space:
- Perception of space: Internal Sense of Space + External Stimuli
- External Stimuli: Sight, Sound, Haptics, etc.
- The experience of moving in virtual space can be created through artificial stimuli.
- Virtual Space allows for more freedom:
- Flying, Warping, Non-Euclidean space, etc.
- Perception of space: Internal Sense of Space + External Stimuli
- Virtual Time:
- Perception of time: Internal Sense + External Stimuli
- External Stimuli: Sense of synchronization with other changing actors (clocks, people, etc.)
- (hypothesis)
- External Stimuli: Sense of synchronization with other changing actors (clocks, people, etc.)
- The experience of moving in virtual time can be created through artificial stimuli.
- Virtual Time allows for more freedom:
- Speed manipulation, Warping, Looping, etc.
- Perception of time: Internal Sense + External Stimuli
🤔 What I want to do with this concept
- I don’t want to force virtual reality/time, but rather provide an alternative choice of reality/time.
⚗️ Applications
- ![image](https://gyazo.com/aa4aa6d64e61224f2d038972922c98e9/thumb/1000)
- Interactive lecture video streaming platform
- Student-generated content overlaid on lecture video
- Goal: Combine the benefits of real-time and on-demand lectures
- Benefits of real-time lectures: Interactive communication between students
- Benefits of on-demand lectures: Control of time
- Method: Virtual time through artificial stimuli
- Pseudo Sync (擬似同期)
- Gives a pseudo sense of synchronization with other students interacting in lectures
- Elastic Sync (弾性同期)
- Secretly control playback speed within the range of 0.9~1.2x
- Synchronize unsynchronized students

- Issue with current voice communication: Only one thread available
- Difficult to have branching discussions
- Applying ==Elastic Sync == to create multithreaded voice communication, where participants eventually receive content from every thread
- 🔬What to research?
- Some ideas:
- Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Mediated Communication
- Applying time-compression algorithms and knowledge from cognitive science
- But I want to focus on engineering and applied science, not basic science
- Prof. Jenann Ismael @ Columbia, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, time
