• I want to articulate what I admire in the field of HCI/CS research.
  • Sutherland presented a vision called The Ultimate Display and implemented a primitive form of VR with a head-mounted three-dimensional display a few years later.
    • Since the 1970s, there have been researchers like Steven Feiner and 舘暲 who have paved the way for VR, even though practical applications seemed distant at the time.
  • I admire those research and researchers who have opened up paths that clearly lead to the current state of VR, even though the practicality seemed far off at the time.

Building a new highway in the wilderness is a job that everyone admires and finds beautiful. However, intellectual giants often set off in search of new wilderness. That’s the opportunity. Because time is equal for everyone. There are also views that can be seen by slowly walking the path that the giants have run through. By walking multiple times, you can see what you have missed. There are still many things that are necessary and important when you think about it later, such as turning on streetlights, building drive-ins, planting trees along the roads, cleaning, etc. Professor Sutherland, the pioneer of CG and VR, said that there were no longer any important problems in this field and moved on to research on asynchronous computers. However, considering the current boom in this field, it is clear that there is still much to be done.

  • That’s true, but as an aspiration, I still want to build new highways in the wilderness. (blu3mo)
