From The Boundary Between Future Society and ‘Meaning’ Differences between Neocybernetics and Symbolic Emergence System Theory

  • In Symbolic Emergence System Theory, symbols are not the same as those in symbol theory, but rather incorporate symbols as defined in pragmatism. On the other hand, in Neocybernetics, information differs from Shannon’s “information,” and although it shares similarities with pragmatism, it refers to phenomena (patterns) that emerge in a system’s self-production (autopoiesis).
  • Furthermore, they differ in how they perceive systems. For example, Symbolic Emergence System Theory does not explicitly theorize how the range and visibility of observation change depending on the observer’s position, while Neocybernetics explicitly incorporates this into its theory.
