HCI

@blu3mo: What is research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)? For example, why do we release software that is just convenient (?) as HCI research? (I was looking at the Proceedings of UIST and it got me thinking)

  • Current understanding of (blu3mo) about “HCI research”
    • Creating adventurous things or gathering knowledge before implementing them in society
      • (Although it may not be profitable in the short term, it has long-term significance, so it is done as research with funding)
    • It is not isolated but has a context connecting the past and the potential for expansion towards the future
  • However, not all research in UIST seems to fit the above description, so the understanding might be slightly off?
  • I will list specific questions that I had while looking at UIST2022 Papers
    • ReCapture: AR-Guided Time-lapse Photography

      • It’s just a useful idea.
      • However, I can’t imagine any potential beyond its convenience.
      • What is the significance of receiving research funding and publishing it as a paper in UIST, instead of developing it and releasing it on the App Store?
        • Significance for society, for other researchers, for the authors
        • (I am not saying that it lacks significance, but I am interested in its significance)

I want to discuss various things with people at UIST2022 (blu3mo)(blu3mo)

  • I had various discussions with @TechPcho, thank you.
    • Perhaps the HCI perspective strongly reflects the ideology of @ishii_mit?
  • Discussion about the insignificance of the label HCI
    • That’s true, it’s evident when looking at the current state of UIST.
  • Criticism of “just do what can be commercialized”
    • I also think so (blu3mo).
    • In that sense, I want to work on creating long-term ideas/visions that cannot be achieved through commercialization.
  • The significance of research is to produce generalizable knowledge about what can be done, etc.
    • Well, that’s engineering as a discipline.
    • However, I am not very interested in continuing to do that.
      • I am more interested in what to create and thinking about abstract concepts.
  • Research and Vision
    • In addition to generalizable knowledge, a doctoral thesis is about expressing a vision to the fullest extent.
      • That’s what I want to do (blu3mo).
  • It feels like a field that combines vision development and accumulation of engineering knowledge.
    • I’m not sure if this dichotomy is good.
